A new jihadist battlefield contingent has emerged in Hama province, indicating preparations to bombard positions held by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) with home-made rockets and possibly even join local rebel ranks.

Harkatul Muhajireen Sunna released two pictures on Wednesday showing its fighters assembling firepower in rural areas of northern Hama. The Sunni group is tied to Al-Qaeda and originates from Iran where it operates undercover.

Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (Syrian Al-Qaeda branch) reportedly invited Harkatul Muhajireen Sunna to join the Syrian Al-Qaeda branch although these efforts are yet to conclude. The latter insurgency group is considered a terrorist organization by Tehran and Damascus.

Meanwhile, the SAA is still preparing renewed assaults on Halfaya and Taibat Al-Imam, two key Islamist strongholds in rural Hama.
